Road-building in Nepal threatens Annapurna Circuit

Wednesday, 02 Apr 2008 15:49
New road-building projects in Nepal may have a major impact on an enormously popular trekking route - the Annapurna Circuit.

A road will allow vehicles to travel the unspoilt wilderness of the Kali Gandaki gorge, the Sunday Times reports.

This would also significantly cut the time taken to complete the Annapurna trekking circuit, which is currently around 19 days.

However adventure holiday specialist Himalayan Kingdoms told the newspaper it is now planning a longer route to avoid the road.

The Annapurna circuit attracts around 10,000 trekkers each year and features a crossing of the 5,416m Thorong La pass.
