Nepal-India border closed for election

Tuesday, 08 Apr 2008 12:39
The border between Nepal and India will be closed from midnight April 7th until midnight April 10th in the run up to the election, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) has advised.

There will be major, planned disruption to transport this week and, at a minimum, all roads will be closed to public traffic from 19:00 local time on April 9th to midnight on April 10th.

The FCO warns the border closure could be extended depending on the political and security situation.

Over the past couple of weeks a number of explosive devices have caused injury and death in Kathmandu and Biratnagar.

Travellers in Nepal should keep themselves aware of events and avoid large gatherings and demonstrations.

The FCO recommends travellers only trek with an experienced guide in a group and should contact the British Embassy for advice before going to areas not normally visited by tourists.
