Ongoing protests by the Gujjar ethnic group in the north of India are causing disruption to road and rail travel, with a general strike called for today (May 29th).
The Indian authorities have advised that further violent protests are anticipated, the Hindustan Times reports.
Delhi is likely to be affected by the strike as there are many Gujjar villages in the vicinity.
The provinces of Uttar Pradesh and Haryana are also on alert, as well as the region around the capital.
The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) warns travellers to monitor local media for developments
They recommend a high level of caution near key tourist sites, government installations, public events, hotels, airports, shopping malls and on public transport.
Gujjars are one of the 'scheduled castes' recognised by the Indian constitution as needing affirmative action to overcome discrimination and poverty.
The strikes have been called by leaders of this group to support Gujjars in Rajasthan demanding scheduled tribe status.
