With Burmese authorities and aid agencies struggling to cope with the aftermath of tropical cyclone Nargis, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) has updated its travel advice for the south-east Asian country.

The cyclone hit the country on May 2nd and has caused significant damage to the Irrawaddy Delta area and Rangoon.

A state of emergency was declared and remains in force in Rangoon and Irrawaddy but has now been lifted in Mon, Karen and Bago.

Rangoon airport has re-opened but many roads are still unpassable in the country and there are low supplies of water, electricity and fuel in Irrawaddy.

Telephone lines are inoperable in many places and communication is difficult.

The FCO advises travellers to exercise caution in travelling to Burma and avoid the areas affected by the cyclone.
