Kenya update: Tension remains after coalition

Friday, 18 Apr 2008 15:39
Political tension remains and the security situation is uncertain following President Kibaki's announcement of a grand coalition cabinet on April 13th in Kenya.

This was the culmination of weeks of negotiation after a power-sharing agreement was signed between the two political parties on February 28th.

There have been a number of clashes between the Kenyan police and the outlawed criminal Mungiki group in Nairobi and the central and Rift Valley provinces.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) is continuing to warn travellers to avoid large gatherings and demonstrations and advises against all but essential travel to low-income areas of Nairobi.

Sporadic demonstrations and fighting has continued in the slum districts of Nairobi, as well as the towns of Nyeri, Nakuru and Eldoret.

However, visits to game reserves are generally trouble free and the FCO is no longer advising against travel to the country in general.

Travellers should be prepared for local transport services to be disrupted.
