The rioting and violence in Kenya has stayed "calmer" according to the latest travel update from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) issued today.
However, there has been no easing of the advice that holidaymakers should not visit the country unless essential.
"There is uncertainty about the security and political situation in the country linked to the disputed presidential election result. There have been violent incidences in parts of Nairobi, Mombasa, Eldoret, Kisumu, Kakemega and Molo. If you are in affected areas you should remain indoors," the FCO said.
"The situation has been calmer since January 4th, but remains volatile. The opposition rallies planned for Nairobi and other urban areas on January 8th 2008 have been cancelled, however there still is the possibility of small gatherings taking place.
"Such gatherings, even if advertised as peaceful, could potentially turn violent. You should avoid all public gatherings and large public meetings. If you are currently in Kenya you should exercise extreme caution and seek advice locally either from your tour operator or the local authorities, particularly if you need to travel."
The FCO added those yet to go on their Kenya holiday should check with their tour operator or airline whether travel arrangements will still be going ahead. Among the tour operators offering alternative dates for those due to go to Kenya in the near future are First Choice and Virgin Holidays.
