The unrest and violence in Kenya of recent days is now calmer the Foreign Office reports in its travel advice issued today.

However, holidaymakers are still advised not to visit the country, unless it is essential.

The government department is now advising only those in "affected areas" - which included Nairobi, Mombasa, Eldoret and Kisumu yesterday - to stay indoors.

"Although the situation is calmer today it remains volatile. There are reports that daily mass gatherings are being planned for Nairobi and other urban areas," the Foreign Office explained.

"Such gatherings could potentially turn violent. You should avoid all public gatherings and large public meetings.

"We are aware of reports that some tour operators are cancelling forthcoming holidays to Kenya. You should contact your tour operator for confirmation of this.

"International flights continue to operate but you should check with your airline before travelling to the airport."
