FCO issues Kenya warnings

Monday, 31 Dec 2007 12:42
Holidaymakers in Kenya are being warned to stay indoors and seek local advice before travelling due to escalating violence stemming from the country's election.

The Foreign Office explains the re-election of president Mwai Kibaki continues to be disputed, resulting in "sporadic incidents of violence" at urban centres, and national security forces being deployed.

"There continues to be serious unrest in parts of Kenya following the announcement of the presidential election results," the Foreign Office explained.

The AFP news agency reports at least 84 people have been killed in riots following the election last Thursday.

The Foreign Office advised: "If you are involved in any security incident you should insist with both the Kenyan authorities and your tour operator that the British High Commission be informed straight away."

See the Foreign Office Kenya travel advice page for the latest information on visiting the country and what to do if you are currently travelling there.
