Self-catering the most popular holiday

Wednesday, 10 Jan 2007 09:35
Self-catering accommodation is the nation's favourite way of holidaying, new research finds.

Over 60 per cent of Brits will be renting self-catering cottages, country houses, budget apartments and luxury villas when they holiday overseas in 2007, research from Mintel shows.

"Renting a private property provides more space, privacy, flexibility and often more luxury pound for pound than other accommodation. It is also extremely cost-effective, often working out at a fraction of the price per person than hotels of a similar standard," explained Alexis de Belloy, managing director of Holiday-Rentals.co.uk.

The variety offered by self-catering accommodation is another factor for the growth in popularity of this type of holiday, alongside advanced internet search tools and special indexes making it easy to find accommodation with specific features or themes, Holiday-Rentals adds.

However, the research finds it is Brits booking their accommodation and transport online for themselves that is really growing, with a decrease reported in self-catering packages sold by tour operators.
