I’m Dreaming of a White Christmas...

Wednesday, 02 Dec 2009 14:33
Let it snow... this Christmas holidays
The white Christmas is traditional to British culture, but it is a rare occurrence in the UK. The last official Christmas snowfall was in 2004 and this year reports predict that the likes of London have just a 10 per cent chance of seeing a single snowflake on December 25th. However, if you and your children are dreaming of a white Christmas this year there are ways to guarantee seeing the white stuff.

Christmas in Lapland

No where encapsulates the magic of Christmas like Lapland. High above the arctic-circle snow clad landscape you’ll find grazing reindeer, husky sledges and Santa Clause himself! Children will never forget this Christmas holiday of a lifetime and chance to be guided around this winter wonderland by one of Santa’s very own elves.

After a 3.5-hour flight the magic starts when you meet your elf guide and drive through the snowy landscape to your warm log cabin where thermal clothing awaits! Private reindeer sleighs, snowmobiles, igloo discovery and cookie making with the eves are all on the agenda to make this magical three-day trip a memorable family experience. Festive dinners are shared with fellow travellers and children can expect a visit from a special guest who will be keen to hear if they have been good this year!

Get your skis on this Christmas

Snow much fun can be had on an alpine skiing holiday over Christmas. During December resorts come alive with festive lights, traditional fare and the warm seasonal scents. Meribel skiing holidays can be great for families as they offer stunning scenery, variety of runs and plenty of nursery slopes for beginners and younger skiers.

On top of this there are ice rinks, woodland trails and traditional chalets with cosy log fires. Children can enjoy learning to ski with English-speaking instructors and modern crèches that boast a garden full of snow – ideal for making snowmen!

A white Christmas closer to home?

Although the UK can’t promise real snow for Santa there are some attractions that can create a magical winter wonderland for children such as Lapland UK in Kent who use theatrical snow to create the traditional scene.

Children will love the snow-themed attractions, ice rinks and Father Christmas appearances across Britain so it is worth looking at the Visit England to see what festivities are local to you.

Santa’s snow survival tips

If you do opt to go further afield here are five top tips for winter holidays to help keep little ones safe and for you to have a stress-free time.

1. A few thin layers are better then one thick jumper. Vests, cotton polo necks and fleeces are lightweight and comfortable to wear under a thicker jacket.
2. Remember to keep moisturiser and lip balm handy, flavoured balms are great for kids.
3. Sunlight is strong so it is vital to use high SPF on any exposed areas such as the nose during skiing and for children to wear protective sunglasses.
4. Cooler temperatures can cause batteries to run out more quickly so remember to pack spares.
5. Remember to pack essentials like spare pairs of gloves and hats, in case they get lost en route to Santa!
