Brazil's Atlantic coast has miles of beaches
The area of Bahia on Brazil's east coast is one of the best places to head to enjoy miles and miles of the country's sandy coastline.
Bahia's capital, Salvador, is Brazil's third most popular tourist destination, and is a good starting point to explore some of the more secluded beaches within its reach.
One of the key features of Brazils beaches are the barracas - huts, that serve food and drinks day and night.
The beach of Farol da Barrahas features some typical Bahian barracas that have a tropical-feel thanks to their thatched roof.
Farol de Barrahas gets its name from the lighthouse there, and has a mix of calm waters with rocky pools. The open Atlantic ocean with strong currents attracts local surfers.
Beyond here is Itapoan, which used to be a village independent of Salvador, but has since been absorbed into the city.
The waters there are protected by rocks and reefs and as a result tend to be good for swimming.
Similarly to Farol de Barrahas, the waters on the far side of the beach have surfers who are keen to ride the Atlantic waves.
One of the prettiest beaches in Salvador is Piata, which is long, broad and lined with coconut trees. The sandy beach slopes gently into the water, making it ideal for swimming.
Flamengo is another attractive stretch of sandy coastline in the area, which is popular thanks to its interesting barracas, which include a Jamaican run shack that's easy to spot thanks to its Union Jack and Jamaican flags.
