If you are keen to track down a unique hotel where the stay is as much a part of the holiday as the destination then word-of-mouth is a great way of finding the best places.
With this in mind, the travel community website TripAdvisor has researched its user's most popular quirky hotels to produce a top ten of the world's best and most unusual places to stay.
As well as being the places to stay that are unlike anywhere on else earth, some of the accommodation is well within budget, the cheapest costing just £25 per night.
If you prefer exclusivity and lavish luxury, the most expensive rooms can be had from £1,250 a night.
And, though some of the hotels may take a long time to reach, there are two British entries into the top ten, making the prospect of a quirky getaway far from out of reach.

The Witchery by the Castle, Edinburgh, Scotland
Making it into the TripAdvisor top ten this year is Britain's very own Witchery by the Castle, in one of the country's most popular cities, Edinburgh.
Located close to Edinburgh Castle on the Royal Mile, the appeal of the Witchery is in its lavish mix of authentic antiques and luxury, making full use of its six centuries of history.
It costs £225 per night on average, so it is certainly a luxury place to stay, but if you are in Edinburgh for a city break you can always get a small taste of what it is like by dining in the high-end restaurant.
The Aurora Express, Fairbanks, Alaska
Take the luxury carriages of a Pullman train and move it to the snowy hills of Fairbanks in Alaska and you get a very unusual hotel experience.
However, the Aurora Express has more than just views to offer. The carriages feature decoration influenced by the American gold rush and the hotel also do fantastic breakfasts. It is also an excellent place to stay to explore Alaska's natural beauty. Rooms cost £66 on average.
