Destinations as diverse as Belem, Brazil and Glasgow, Scotland are among the picks for 2006 by the editor of Frommer's travel guide.
Amador County in California, Charleston in South Carolina, Goa in India and the Kenyan game parks also feature in travel expert Pauline Frommer's selection of up and coming destinations for the next 12 months.
The top ten, which have been chosen because they are great places to visit that are not yet swarmed with tourists and where bargains can still be found, is rounded off by the Venezuelan island of Margarita, the Hawaiian island of Molokai, Ramah in New Mexico and Tasmania, Australia
Glasgow's renaissance during the last decade is recognised by the guide's description of it as "more cosmopolitan and modern" than Edinburgh.
It features "radiant Victorian architecture" and a large artist community with museums, fine art and contemporary galleries.
The guide says that a trip to Glasgow – the only European destination to feature in the top ten – is not complete without a visit to the Burrell art collection, described as "one of Europe's best".
Belem, Brazil, sits on the banks of the river Amazon at the edge of the Amazon rainforest. The old downtown contains a colonial fort, cathedral and a myriad of 19th century buildings.
According to the guide, Belem's chief attraction is the island of Marajo – the world's largest freshwater island where flocks of wading birds, caiman and piranha can be seen.
Frommer's up and coming destinations for 2005
Amador County, California - Gold mining tours are a must for visitors to Amador County, with the cities of Amador, Sutter Creek and Jackson providing a "window into its Gold Rush past".
Charleston, South Carolina - Charleston contains an array of well-preserved 18th century architecture within the original walled city, and 19th-century architecture along Meeting Street and the Battery, which are described by Frommer's as a must-see.
Goa, India - According to a Frommer's, a trip to Anjuna's Wednesday market is a must for travellers to Goa. The market is characterised by an eclectic mix of merchandise and people, including Karnataka farmers with 'fortune-telling' cows.
Kenyan game parks - The Amboseli National Park's 392 sq km of grassy plains, with Tanzania's Mount Kilimanjaro as a backdrop, is described as an ideal place to watch herds of elephants.
Margarita, Venezuela - For bargains and a taste of local culture on the island getaway of Margarita, head to El Mercado de los Conejeros. This semi-permanent flea market on the north-western outskirts of Porlamar is full of food, crafts and dry goods.
Molokai, Hawaii - Frommer's recommends a horseback ride along a dirt trail and through a mango grove to Ililiopae – Molokai's most powerful heaiau or ancient human sacrifice temple. The temple offers views over the village of Mapulehu.
Ramah, New Mexico - Head to the Ramah farmers' market for local produce including lettuce, spinach, beets, onions and carrots. Sample hazelnut cookies and raspberry tarts while "live music lilts out across irrigated fields where horses and cattle graze".
Tasmania, Australia - Visiting the national park and World Heritage area that takes in Cradle Mountain and Lake St. Clair is a must. It is "one of the most spectacular regions in Australia" according to Frommer's and after Hobart and Port Arthur, the most visited place in Tasmania.
