Skiers told to shop around for travel insurance

Skiers are often not covered for events like piste closure and ski pass theft
Winter sports enthusiasts are paying too much for their travel insurance without receiving adequate protection, a price comparison website has found.
Insuresupermarket.com said that by buying cover from a travel agent, rather than a standalone policy from a financial services provider, skiers, snowboarders and other winter sports enthusiasts are often not covered for events like piste closure and ski pass theft.
It also advises that taking a policy from a big-name provider can cost as much as 60 per cent more than from smaller firms.
Moreover, some current accounts and credit cards offer travel insurance for free which can be upgraded to provide higher levels of cover.
"With the ski season in full swing, we are reminding people to check out all the options before deciding on their insurance policy. Skiing is an expensive hobby so it's wise to check that you will be covered for your ski pass, equipment and piste closure," said Richard Mason director of insuresupermarket.com.
The price comparison website points out that holidaymakers can also save more than £20 on travel insurance by opting for a smaller provider - without losing out on the level of cover offered.
insuresupermarket.com advises people to check the small print of their cover to make sure it includes things like ski equipment; piste closure; inability to ski due to accident, sickness, or the loss or theft of ski pass; and avalanche closure.
