With the winter holiday season truly upon us, those looking to get away for a break abroad have been reminded to get adequate insurance for their travels.

Insurer Legal & General (L&G) has warned that many holiday-makers are unaware of the true value of their luggage, with more than 50 per cent of those surveyed chronically under-valuing it.

L&G's research found that over half of those questioned thought their luggage was worth £500, when really it has been estimated that the luggage for a family of four is valued at more than £2,500.

This statistic is exacerbated for those going on a skiing trip, as it has been gauged that the value of luggage is more like £2,500 per person.

Garry Skelton, marketing director at Legal & General Insurance said: "It is clear that holidaymakers seriously undervalue the contents of their luggage. Many of us forget the actual value of the suitcase itself.

"The accumulated value of all the contents is not fully appreciated as just a few items can soon add up, particularly if you like designer accessories."

Holiday-makers hitting the slopes have also been warned that the correct insurance is vital in order to cover any injuries they might sustain while ploughing the powder, as treatment abroad can often exceed £1,000.

Mr Skelton continued: "It is so important that holidaymakers check their insurance cover to make sure they have the cover they need, before they travel.

"This could be insurance cover under a travel policy or personal possessions and travel cover under a home insurance policy."
