Machu Picchu in the Andes, Peru
Steeped in mystery and tradition, Peru is famous for its high-altitude Inca ruins of the majestic Machu Picchu and the enigmatic Nasca Lines.
A holiday in Peru would not be complete without seeing these two sights, however there is much more to see.
Peru has some of the most biologically diverse regions on the planet and Amazon Rainforest is as dense and thriving there as anywhere in South America.
An eight-day tour of Peru's essential visitor attractions is a great way to see the range of what the country has to offer.
The tour begins with an overnight stay at Peru's capital city, Lima, before moving on to the Cusco, in south-eastern Peru near the Urubamba Valley (Sacred Valley) of the Andes mountain range.
Cusco is the historic capital of the sun-worshipping Inca empire, and at an altitude of around 3,500m (11,500 feet) its recommended that you relax for around three hours to adjust.
While staying at Cusco you will be taken on a private half-day city tour and get a chance visit the surrounding archaeological sites.
Next on the itinerary is a brief stop at Chinchero, once the country estate of one of the last emperors, Tupa Inca, before moving on to Ollantaytambo.
Ollantaytambo is an attractive little town located at the western end of the Sacred Valley that has been built on top of original Inca foundations and is Peru's best surviving example of ancient town planning.
The town is located at the foot of some spectacular Inca ruins, which you are able to tour with a private, guided full day excursion to Pisac Market at Ollantaytambo fortress.
The final stage of the trip is Aguas Calientes, located at the foot of Machu Picchu. A short rail transfer will take you to the top of the ruins, where you can enjoy a private guided tour of the ancient citadel followed by lunch.
Prices start from are £1,912 per person (based on two sharing) and include transfers, internal and international flights (London Heathrow), seven nights' accommodation, guided excursions and most meals.
