One of the most popular places for walking holidays in Germany with the natives is the Allgäu region in western Bavaria.

However, more recently the area has also been getting more popular with Brits, and thousands more holidaymakers from the UK have been visiting the area in the last year, the tourist board reports.

The area has been attracting holidaymakers for more than a century, thanks to major natural attractions such as Lake Constance and the Alps.

Active holidays in the area have also long been popular, with hikes from village to village, spas and skiing some of the top things to do in the Allgäu.

Among the top German active holiday destinations in the Allgäu is the mountain village of Bad Hindelang, which has great facilities and routes for walking, cycling and inline skating.

A rotating cable railway is available to get walkers up to the higher-altitude mountain routes to start their hikes, which is also great for families who want to enjoy the active holiday experience, or holidaymakers who want the mountain views without the strain of a tough walk.

For cyclists there are hundreds of kilometres of bike routes and paths in the area, which extend all the way into the Tyrol region of bordering Austria.

There are also three specific downhill cycling paths also available from the recently built bike park (Hornbahn Hindelang), catering for riders after a more adrenalin-fuelled holiday. Each path caters for cyclists of different abilities, and there is a cable car to the top of the runs to keep the fun going.

Another active holiday hotspot in the Allgäu is Kleinwalsertal, located 1,100 metres into the Alps in the Walser valley.

Considered one of the top mountain biking areas in Germany, it is also very popular for walking holidays as there are around 35 mountain lodges to stay at in the area.

Among the tour operators with breaks to Allgäu in Germany are Responsible Travel, HF Holidays and Headwater.
