Travelling on the Trans-Siberian

Wednesday, 07 Jun 2006 12:09
See Russia by train
One of the most exciting, cost-effective and at times romantic ways of seeing the great expanse of Russia is on the Trans-Siberian railway.

Visitors in Russia who take the train usually set off from Moscow, and it is worth sparing a few days before you leave to take in the sights and delights that this beautiful and ornate city has to offer.

Once on the train, prepare for a journey covering 12,000 kilometres through rugged countryside, small villages, all the way to Vladivostok.

The journey, which takes around 11 days, takes you through old and new Russia, giving you the chance to see how the country has changed and developed, stopping in popular tourist spots like Irkutsk.

Many holidaymakers like to make the journey alone, leaving them to admire the countryside in peace, though there are plenty of opportunities to make new friends.

Fellow travellers on the train, while changing constantly, are often keen to strike up friendships, meaning you should never be short of someone to talk to if you travel alone. This can build a far richer experience, as you get to experience and enjoy other cultures while you travel.

The train is basic in its amenities, but there are toilets as you would expect as well as hot water boilers for you to make noodles and cups of tea – something you will be grateful for when the Siberian nights set in. There is also an onboard restaurant, though this is often very busy.

Of course, you do not have to take the train for the whole distance, and there are plenty of opportunities to alight when you wish, stopping to buy home-cooked food from local villagers and seeing the sights of several different parts of Russia.

Tickets typically cost around £150. XXX
