The hidden delights of America's 50th state
The islands of Hawaii are world renowned for their surfing and relaxed culture, a world away from mainland America – but they are also home to a clutch of fabulous hotels to delight the senses.
The American state of Hawaii is composed of virtually the entire volcanic Hawaiian Island archipelago, which is made up of hundreds of islands spread over 1,500 miles through the central Pacific Ocean.
At the south-eastern end of the chain are a cluster of larger islands - Kauai, Oahu, Molokai, Lanai, Maui, and Hawai'i - which host the majority of the main tourist attractions.
Of these islands Hawai'i – often called the Big Island or Big Isle to avoid confusion - is the focus of attention and home to the attractions which give Hawaii its global reputation.
Among these are a host of internationally renowned boutique hotels, catering for the needs of all tourists, regardless of budget.
Where to stay…
For those looking for somewhere fashionable yet classic to stay on the island of Maui, visitors could do worse than to head for the
Paia Inn, a Beachtown Boutique Hotel.
This hotel offers an edge of trendiness, but also uses some of the characteristics of the old buildings to create a hip and stylish hotel with history – which also donates percentage of its sales to three charities.
Just inches from the beach, surfers can paddle a few strokes out into the break, the inn is located at the heart of lively Paia town with its colourful plantation style buildings, covered sidewalks, fine restaurants and hip, trendy boutiques.
On the other hand, the
Hanalei Colony Resort on the island of Kauai offers visitors a chance to completely shut themselves off from the rest of the world and to unwind and relax in the tropical surroundings.
The resort is overlooked by emerald green mountains and a stunning backdrop, which lets visitors relax in their very own picturesque environment. There are also no televisions or telephones in the rooms, allowing tourists to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
Over on the island of Oahu, a boutique hotel has just opened for business after extensive renovations.
The
Aqua Coconut Waikiki opened on June 1st 2008, with the rooms, lobby, breakfast area and front office all being renovated to give a more art deco look.
On site is also an intimate pool with a wrap around deck so guests can relax after a day surfing by the beach.
Overlooking Pohakumanu Bay, the
The Palm Cliff House Inn is one of the most sublime boutique hotels on Hawaii’s Big Island.
The hotel is a true escape from the crowds, located 15 minutes away from the Hilo town, giving visitors a chance to return to city life anytime they please.
Each room has a private lanai (balcony) with a scenic view, luxurious bathrooms and private entrance to the room. The hotel is also only two miles away from Akaka Falls, with day trips available to go and see this natural beauty.
As Honolulu’s first designer luxury boutique hotel, the
Hotel Renew on Oahu prides itself on its comfort and tranquil environment.
With its striking décor and friendly staff, the hotel is a must for visitors who are looking to have a break. Situated half a block away from the world famous Waikiki beach, the hotel is also in an ideal place to experience the hubbub of Honolulu.
For a more traditionally Hawaiian feel, visitors are advised to head to the
Kalaekilohana Hotel on Hawaii’s Big Island, where they will find one of the only bed and breakfast locations which remains Hawaiian owned.
With four beautiful suites to house guests, a grand lanai and a panoramic view over the southernmost tip of the Big Island, visitors will experience a cosy Hawaiian experience.
The hotel is also in a prime position to visit Kilauea volcano, the world’s most active volcano, with the hotel doing its own tour, along with snorkelling trips to Pu'uhonua ‘O Honaunau and Ho‘okena.
