Israel is well-known for its historical and religious sites, not least the Wailing Wall, but it is also home to the most museums per capita in the world.
With more than 200 museums dotted around the country, culture vultures can be sure there will be something they want to see on a holiday in Israel.
One of Israel's most famous museums is the Israel Museum in Jerusalem, which covers all manner of art and history.
It gives a revealing insight into Israeli and Jewish culture, with many exhibits including traditional Jewish bridal wear and historical pieces such as traditional parchment from the 14th century.
The art on show at the museum is far-reaching, taking in European art, contemporary art, modern art, photography and design and architecture.
The breadth of choice means there is something for every art lover, and the addition of a children's wing, replete with eye-catching exhibitions, art classes and a playground, make for a complete family day out.
Elsewhere in Jerusalem is the Museum of Islamic Art, which contains hundreds of objects representing the art of Islamic countries throughout the ages, made from myriad materials.
A journey to the Haifa region will reward you with, among other things, an insight into the history of the city of Hadera at the Khan Museum. Based on the remains of a late-Ottoman empire farm, it includes outdoor and indoor exhibits, archives and a library, giving an insight into the way of life in the 19th century.
If it is ancient lifestyles that intrigue you, you can visit the Ancient Katzrin Park in Galilee, where a reconstructed synagogue is there to be explored, as well as a fully-furnished house that feels like it has been preserved in time.
These of course are but the tip of the iceberg for Israel's museums. For a fuller list, visit
