Brits spend big on their honeymoon

Brits are splashing out on honeymooning to destinations like Mauritius
Newlyweds are comfortable with forking out for an extravagant honeymoon, new research shows.

While Brits' attitide to paying for weddings has become more restrained, when it comes to honeymoons they keep on spending.

The majority of people are comfortable with the average cost of a honeymoon, estimated by Mintel as £2,475 per couple.

Nearly half of people questioned for a survey by Halifax Personal Loans think that paying out between £2,000 and £4,999 per couple is a reasonable expense for a honeymoon.

This is in contrast to the attitude of people to weddings, whereby only nine per cent of people now think the average cost of a wedding, about £16,000, is reasonable.

Halifax's Ian Corfield said: "In contrast, people seem generally more comfortable with average honeymoon costs and do not see this level of expense as unreasonable or over inflated."

According to tour operator Kuoni, the top ten destinations for honeymoons include exotic locations such as Sri Lanka, Mauritius, St Lucia, Antigua, Fiji and Barbados.

One in five British honeymooners are prepared to spend over £5,000, while two per cent think £50,000 is a suitable amount to spend on their honeymoon.
