Van Helsing's Castle of Dracula
Romania is a country of beautiful rolling plains, mountainous ranges, medieval castles and the world's most famous blood-sucker, Count Dracula.
Bram Stoker, the writer who created the fictional vampire of the Count, set his novel in Transylvania, the home of the historical figure he is thought to have based the character on, Vlad Tepes aka Vlad the Impaler of Wallachia.
Transylvania and Wallachia form the western and central parts of Romania, and are an essential destination for any Dracula or horror fan.
There is a vibrant tourism industry in Transylvania that caters for tourists interested in the infamous vampire.
There is a tour that takes in the 14 century town of Sighisoara, which is where Vlad was born. Here, his house has been turned into a museum and restaurant, giving the visitor an insight into where the legend began.
Or there is Snagov Monastery, a logical way of book-ending an examination of Tepes, as it is where he is said to have been buried after he was assassinated with a stake through his heart.
In between, Castle Bran near Brasov is worth a visit, as it is Stoker's inspiration for the fictional Dracula's castle.
Poienari Castle in Arges County is also popular with Drac fans, as it was repaired and taken over by Vlad Tepes in the 15th century. Although in disrepair now, it still casts an intimidating shadow from its steep rock pedestal.
