Italy has been voted the top foreign country for gay travellers, according to a new survey.

Its sumptuous food, chic population and frequently homoerotic art saw it top a poll for website outtraveler.com, ahead of France and the United Kingdom.

Gay Paris lives up to its name by being voted best foreign city for gay travellers, ahead of London in second, and Amsterdam and Sydney, which were tied in third.

New York was surprisingly named as best US city, ahead of the San Francisco, with Miami in third place.

The big island of Hawaii, which apparently boasts the only gay bar in Hawaii outside of Honolulu, was named as best island.

Puerto Rico and another Hawaiian island, Maui, were second in the islands category, with Bali in third.
