Iceland is a brilliant destination to get out into the outdoors
If you are looking for an active holiday but fancy going somewhere really different then Iceland's national parks offer incredible landscapes and unusual activities.
Additionally, Iceland's government announced last month it would be creating a new national park, set to be the biggest in Europe, and taking up an eighth of the country's land mass.
Made up of two existing national parks - Skaftafell and Jökulsárgljúfur - the 15,000 square kilometre space will take in the Vatnajökull glacier. Also within the park will be Breioamerkursandur - a glacial lagoon where blocks of ice are broken off and float out to sea.
Created in 1973, Jökulsárgljúfur National Park is on the banks of a glacial river in the north-east of the country. Top sights in the park include ancient volcanoes, waterfalls and giant rock formations.
One of the most impressive of these is the point where several huge waterfalls combine going into the Jökulsárgljúfur river canyon.
Dettifoss is considered one of the strongest waterfalls in Europe, and can be seen on a hike through the park, along with Selfoss which is just above it.

At Skaftafell National Park holidaymakers can find the kind of extreme differences Iceland is famed for - lush greens, hot volcanic landscapes and ice caps.
Located in the south of Iceland, holidaymakers can see black sand, waterfalls, arctic foxes and many differences species of birds. The park also has a visitor centre explaining the geological history of how the park was formed, and is also a good place to go for a walking holiday.
If you are looking a more unusual active holiday adventure, then snowkiting over icecaps are an adrenalin-fuelled way of experiencing Iceland's outdoors.
The activity involves being harnessed to a kite and using skis and or board to speed over ice.
Snowkiter and Icelandair are offering snowkiting tours staying in self-catering wooden cabins in the lava fields of Húsafell on the edge of glacial river Kaldá.
Week-long stays are available during June and July and include flights, transfers, accommodation and guides. Prices start from £665 per person. For more information see
