Budapest: currently the destination for most foreign tourists
Low-cost airline Ryanair is launching its first ever route to Hungary early next year.
The Irish carrier will offer three flights a week from the UK to Hungary's Lake Balaton.
The new route will give British tourists the opportunity to more easily explore areas of Hungary outside of the capital Budapest.
"Until now, relatively few British tourists have ventured outside the capital, but we believe that is about to change," said Balazs Szucs, director of the Hungarian National Tourist Office in London.
"Ryanair's first route to Hungary also makes Lake Balaton the first destination outside the capital to be accessible from Britain by air. This offers visitors from the UK an unprecedented opportunity to explore Hungary's unique wildlife, countryside, culture and history."
The flights will go between London Stansted airport and FlyBalaton airport in Sarmellek on Saturdays, Tuesday and Thursday.
Lake Balaton, central Europe's largest freshwater lake, is a popular summer destination with Hungarian tourists. Sarmallek is located on the western tip of the lake.
The region's attractions include the healing thermal waters of Heviz, the volcanic cones of the Balaton Upland National Park, and the Kis-Balaton nature reserve.
Flights from London Stansted to Balaton start on February 18th and can be booked at:
