Paris is top for short breaks

Monday, 14 Mar 2005 11:35
Paris will be visited by nearly 1.4 million Brits in the next six months
Paris will be the destination for nearly one in ten Britons intending to take a short trip abroad in the next six months.

The attractions of the French capital will lure close on 1.4 million Brits, according to a survey for Sainsbury's Bank.

A further million will head to the canals and cafes of the Dutch capital of Amsterdam, while New York, Barcelona and Prague make up the remainder of the top five.

Londoners are the section of the population most likely to take a short trip abroad, with 40 per cent taking a short-trip between now and July 2005.

They are closely followed by those in the Midlands, on 38 per cent; while those living in Wales/ West and the South East or East Anglia were least likely to take a short-trip on 27 per cent.

Sainsbury's Bank is urging people to remember to buy travel insurance. The bank's Michael Liddell said: "Short trips abroad are very popular, but as people are not away for long and often make last minute bookings, travel insurance can be easily overlooked.

"Calamities such as falling ill or losing your baggage can just as easily happen on a short trip, so it's as important to pack your travel insurance as it is your toothbrush and passport."
