On July 1st 2006 hundreds of cyclists will set out on one of the world's toughest endurance events – the 93rd Tour de France.
Two week's later, with the challenge for the yellow jersey in full flow, a group of cyclists will set off on their own tour – tracing the tracks of the official race.
Travel operator Cycling Classics is offering adventurous tourists the chance to participate in several week-long cycling excursions along the expected route of the 2006 Tour de France, while the main event is still taking place.
Cycling Classic's 2006 Tour de France packages are aimed at seasoned cyclists who want to experience the race's most dramatic stages on the unforgiving climbs of the Alps.
It is offering places on a guided tour (July 14th – 20th) setting out from the beautiful ski town of Les Deux Alpes, which includes watching the Tour's stages finishing on Alpe d'Huez and the next stage over the Col de Galibier (cost: £1,129*).
And for the more independent-minded cyclist, it has limited places on a self-guided tour based on the infamous Alpe d-Huez, taking place between July 14th and July 21st (cost: £703*).
If you cannot make it out to France while the Tour is in progress, Cycling Classics also offers a tour combining the Alps, Ventouz and the Pyrenees in both May and October.
