Cycling holidays are very popular with families and friends
Burgundy, in central France, is best known for its skilled production of some of the world's finest red wines, making it a prime destination for wine-tasting holidays.
However, one of Burgundy's best-kept secrets is its wealth of hiking and cycling-holidays, which take advantage of the region's deserted and tranquil roads and countryside.
Visitors can take a number of bicycle tours around some of Burgundy's best sights, including monuments from its Roman history, and of course the region's wine-making facilities.
For example, the seven-day Beaune to Cluny bike tour with DiscoverFrance starts in Burgundy's wine-making epicentre, before moving through and exploring medieval towns like Buxy and Roman structures such as the abbey at Cluny.
On the way, deluxe lodgings are provided, as well as quality food and drink, taking in Burgundy classics such as beef bourguignon and coq au vin. The tour costs €1,240 per person.
For the real foody and fitness fanatic, the Burgundy Gastronomy and Wine tour is a must.
Seven days' cycling and visiting towns, combined with six nights' accommodation, are complemented by an itinerary that takes in some of the region's finest restaurants between Dijon and Beaune.
Holidaymakers should not be put off by the thought of a heavy days' cycling, however, as the route is moderate and leisurely paced, and merely works to increase your appetite before you reach your next gastronomic pit-stop. The tour costs €1,295 with DiscoverFrance.
