For travellers who want the authentic road trip experience, the USA is one of the world's best destinations for a driving holiday.

As well as offering endless roads, car hire in the US tends to be good value, fuel quite cheap, and there are lots of options to choose from. Whether you want to travel in a big group in an A-team-style Chevrolet van, a few friends in a convertible Ford Mustang or save money with something smaller, you are sure to find your tastes are catered for.

Though there are hundreds of sights to experience on America's open roads, from the bizarre to the beautiful, there are some drives that holidaymakers agree are among the country's best.

With this in mind, car hire specialist Alamo surveyed its customers for their top ten drives to find out which US road trips offered the most amazing scenery.

Here are some of travelbite.co.uk's favourites:

  • Driving through Monument Valley
Monument Valley stretches for miles across the Arizona and Utah state border, and gives holidaymakers probably the best-known American road trip scenery.

Long straight roads reach out as far as the horizon, as drivers pass through the huge desolate, red rock formations, which have been given names such as The Three Sisters and The Mittens.

See the American South West and Navajo Nation Parks websites for more information.

  • Cruising through Florida's Everglades up to Miami
Cruise through Miami on the 2,000 mile-long US 41, before heading down to Everglades - a unique habitat, as famous for its alligators as its lush plantlife.

  • Spectacular scenery on the Pacific Coast Highway
Driving along the windy coastal road from Montery to Morro Bay in northern California reveals some spectacular ocean scenery. At 123 miles long, and taking around two and half hours to complete, you may even want to turn back and do the drive going the other way.

For more information see the official California tourist board website.

  • Driving the Going-to-the-Sun road in Montana
Montana's Glacier National Park is home to a majestic 50 mile route taking visitors through the park's forests, mountains and lakes. If you are lucky you may also see packs of wolves, grizzly bears and white mountain goats.

For more information see Glacier National Park website.
