Australia holiday ad ban overturned

Tuesday, 21 Mar 2006 11:33
Australia's ads will now been seen on British TV
Brits will get to see Australia's controversial new ad campaign, which asks "So Where the Bloody Hell Are You?", after all.

The advertising regulator has reversed its initial decision to cut the word "bloody" from the advert, which is designed to promote holidays to Australia.

The phrase is uttered by an Aussie girl on a beach in a bikini in the advert's final scene.

The initial decision by the Broadcast Advertising Clearance Centre (BACC) mystified Australian tourism officials, because the ad had been cleared to appear in cinemas, print and online.

But they are pleased by the decision to reverse the ban, and by the publicity the ban created.

Tourism Australia's managing director, Scott Morrison, said: "We have received great publicity from the launch and can now run the campaign in full."

He added: "On the day of the UK ban we had more than 70,000 visitors to our campaign website, which is an all-time record.

"And since then the momentum has just continued to build."

The campaign is designed to offer tourists a "uniquely Australian invitation".
