For active holidaymakers rafting can be a fantastic way of experiencing the great outdoors, whether you are looking for a thrill-seeking adventure or a gentle river ride.

South Korea has a number of locations where you can take to the water, from areas with calm, beautiful landscapes, to faster-moving rivers with stronger currents.

One of the best places to head is the Hantangang river in the Cheorwon region of the country.

Located around 90 minutes from Seoul, the river is renowned for its clarity and depth, as well as unusual rock formations, such as the Giamgoeseok rocks on the Hantangang riverbed.

Also in the area is the Goseokjeong Pavilion, which was originally built between 57BC and 935AD but was damaged in the Korean War, before being restored in 1971.

As well as the pavilion itself, another attraction along the Hantangang is a ten-metre basalt rock eruption close from which there are great views of the river's sweeping S-shape, as well as a chance to go on boat rides.

Another family friendly destination for the South Korea rafting experience is the Donggang River in Gangwon-do, which is also ideal for beginners thanks to its lack of strong currents.

One of the best destinations to head for in the region is the Arayeon Valley, which as well as being the best place to go rafting is also great for seeing some of South Korea's best wildlife.

These include otters, flying squirrels and owls, as well as lots of fish.

The area can be reached from Yeongwol bus and train stations, and there are around 12 rafting companies in the area.

However, if you are looking for more of an adrenalin rush from your rafting holiday, then the Geumdang Valley is the place to go.

A five kilometre course runs from Mount Geumdangsan, Mount Geomunsan and the Deungmaeji Village to Baekam-dong, which has higher levels of fast flowing water so if you want to take it easier there is no need to paddle.

The clean water of the Pyeongchanggang River, sandbanks where you can pause and take in the views of the rising mountains make this a great rafting destination, as well as being a popular fishing location.

The area can be reached from the Gangwon-do Jangpyeong Express Bus Terminal.
