Cape Town viewed from Table Mountain: Restaurants will be putting their cards on the table with the new ratings system
Tourists visiting South Africa will soon be able to access information on the quality of restaurants around the country.

The Tourism Grading Council of South Africa has announced that many South African restaurants will now offer visitors looking for a tasty meal out a five star rating, reports the Independent Online website.

A five star rating would mean that the restaurant offers food and service that is on par with the best in international standards while a one star rating would offer the guarantee that all the minimum hygiene standards had been met.

Although the scheme is voluntary, the council is busy trying to raise awareness of the scheme throughout the country.

The council already offers grading for accommodation, such as hotels, bed and breakfasts and country and game lodges. However, they are also looking to extend the service not only to restaurants but to transport services, travel agencies and even golf courses.
