Machu Picchu, Peru, is the number one wonder of the world, according to a new survey.

The lost Inca city, which is on the itineraries of many South America-bound travellers, received over 50 per cent more votes than any other attraction in a poll of Wanderlust magazine readers.

The temples of Angkor, Cambodia, were second on the list, the Taj Mahal, India, was in third, and the ancient city of Petra was in fourth.

The Great Pyramid at Giza, Egypt, the only surviving attraction among the original seven wonders of the ancient world, is only at number eight in the new list of the planet's most extraordinary sights.

In the survey of over 3,500 travellers, the Grand Canyon, Arizona, was the highest placed natural phenomena, in fifth place, and only one of two in the new seven wonders of the world – the other being the Galapagos Islands, Ecuador, in seventh place.

Sixth on the list, and completing the seven wonders, is the only made-made phenomena that can be seen from space – the Great Wall of China.

Lyn Hughes, Wanderlust's editor-in-chief, said: "To explore any of these seven fully requires a great sense of adventure, but they truly represent the most amazing travel experiences on the planet".

The magazine is publishing a full list of 75 wonders in its latest edition, on sale from today.

British wonders to make the list include the Highlands, in 41st place, Stonehenge, in 50th place, and the London Eye, in 65th place.
