St Petersburg was founded on May 27th 1703 and the city now celebrates its birthday each year with huge historical re-enactments, parades and concerts, all crowned by a lavish late-night fireworks display.

White Nights, meanwhile, normally run from June 11th to July 2nd, and are the period where the sun hardly sets on the city, and sees days and night which buzz almost constantly with special events and parties in almost constant sunlight. While many of the world's most northerly cities have similar celebrations events, St Petersburg's are famed to be among the most beautiful, and its range of events the widest and most energetic.
