Details of what's on in Munich throughout the year.
Festivals
Perhaps the most notorious festival in Germany, the
Oktoberfest is an essential date in any beer lover's diary. Taking place across September and October, it is a celebration of folk music and good ale. The 16-day festival is attended by some six million people every year. Expect to see plenty of parades, fancy dress and more lederhosen than an army-sized oom-pah band could shake a tuba at.
August's Sommerfest is a rapidly-growing festival in Munich. Based in the Coubertin-Platz and Olympic Park, it has beer tents, open-air theatre, rock and jazz music and marching oom-pah players. The kids are catered for with puppet shows and fireworks displays.
The
Munich Film Festival takes place over one week in July, and specialises in premiering hot new German features and some of the best cinema from around the world, along Munich's Movie Mile. Germany's biggest film festival takes place at venues between the Film Museum in the west and RIO Filmpalast in the east.
