Details of what's on in Brussels throughout the year

The Brussels International Festival of Fantastic Film (BIFF) runs for two weeks in March, highlighting the latest in art-house discoveries and quirky animations. It also features activities such as bizarre bodypainting that would make a village fete blush.

A swarming paean to creativity, the Zinneke Parade takes place once every two years and is a celebration of Brussels' cultural heritage, old and new. Residents and local companies work together to create mind-bending array of bizarre costumes to take part in parades in front of 300,000 people. Fittingly, the costumes are often a mishmash of parts, given that a Zinneke is a real Brussels person, a mixture of Walloon, Flemish, Spanish blood.

As part of the Brussels Festival of Early Music, there also shows being held in the dramatic surroundings of Ambras Castle, which prove popular with locals and visitors. Among the shows to enjoy are Dance Merrily to Your Death and Mozart's Playroom.
