Nuremberg is a modern city with a medieval face.
Often overlooked in favour of its larger neighbour Munich, Bavaria's second city has much to offer in its own right.
The walled old town, with the Kaiserburg Castle as the centrepiece, provides an insight into the city's past, as well as being pleasant to potter around.
Nuremberg is also home to Germany's biggest art collection – the legacy of one of its most famous residents, Albrecht Durer, who is credited with bringing the Renaissance to Germany.
But the city also has a racier side, hosting Germany's biggest open air rock festivals and trendy clubs that attract the world's top house DJs.
