Olde worlde Cologne is beautiful in a traditional sense, but is forward-looking enough to have embraced modern design and ideas.

Its wonderfully ornate squares, churches and cathedral blend in with expensive, trendy boutiques, which trade in superb designer gear.

Modernism is very much embraced in many of its museums, such as Museum Ludwig, with its collections of artworks from the likes of Warhol, that pushed the envelope of modern art forward.

The theatre and opera are also worth a visit, and there is some outstanding local beer and food to taste in the evenings.

Locals in Cologne are most fond of the Rhine River, which flows through the city and provides a gorgeous backdrop to any activity. While pricey at times, it is worth trying to grab a meal on the waterfront during your stay, or even taking a boat trip through Cologne.
