Getting around Portland

Portland has a unique public transportation system which is widely used as a model for other cities around the country. The MAX light rail is an excellent means for getting around Portland and surrounding areas (as noted, it goes to the airport as well), as is the Portland Street Car which connects the NW quadrant of Portland with the downtown area.
The bus system is also very well planned with hundreds of routes to all corners of the city and beyond, and is crucial to getting around on the east side of the river. The bus station is located right in the middle of downtown on SW 4th and SW 5th avenues.
If you are staying inside downtown, however, you might be best off using your own two legs, as most Portlanders do, using the MAX to get across the river if need be.
If you want a car, rather than renting one at the airport,
FlexCar operates in Portland and will gladly "share" one with you for an affordable hourly rate.
