City guide

Getting around Amsterdam

The most common form of public transport is the tram, although there are also bus and some metro services to the outer suburbs. See the local transit authority website for more information. Remember to validate your ticket when you board the tram.

You can buy a strippenkaart ticket for local transport within the city from newsagents, including from the one in the central court of Schiphol airport plaza. It is also possible to buy a ticket from the tram driver, although this will cost more. You can buy multi-day passes.

The locals get around Amsterdam by bicycle and there are a number of rental companies around central Amsterdam that hire by the day or the week.

Free ferries run from behind Centraal Station to destinations such as Amsterdam Noord. There are also ferry services to the Eastern Docklands.
