Brit revelers invade Prague

The less than favorable caricature enjoyed by British tourists across the globe as booze fuelled troublemakers has been around for a while now. Popular cheap holiday destinations in Spain and the Canaries have long entertained hordes of lobster red, bevvied up British revelers often charged with exporting a rather unhelpful brand of international relations.

These days it seems that Brits seeking holiday hedonism on foreign shores have expanded their horizons beyond the classic ‘sun, sea and sangria’ destinations to bring their ‘lively’ holidaymaking to Eastern European cities like Prague where, conveniently, beer turns out to be very cheap. It appears that a host of cities not too long ago obscured behind the iron curtain such as Riga, Tallinn, Vilnius and Krakow have become, thanks in part to cheap flights making them more accessible, British Hen and Stag party destinations of choice. It’s an interesting by-product of the expansion of the EU that no sooner has Europe welcomed countries like Poland, Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia into the warmth of its economic embrace than they find their streets inundated by hordes of sozzled Brits seemingly intent on bringing the charms of a Saturday night in Romford to the farthest reaches of the civilized world.

The by now well established capital of far-flung weekend boozing (how cosmopolitan we’ve become) is undoubtedly Prague, the ‘golden city’ - historically and architecturally rich, quite possibly one of the most beautiful cities in the world and now proud host to a brave new era hedonistic British tourism. Given the findings of a recent report entitled ‘British behavior abroad’ however, the Czechs would be well justified in having a few reservations. Amongst the reports findings is the fact that the Czech Republic tops the list of European holiday destinations where Brits are disproportionately likely to need consular assistance for a diverse selection of problems from lost passports to hospitalization, a development blamed on Stag and Hen party related hi-jinks.

With cheap flights to the Czech capital now available for less than the cost of a night out in your home town (from not much more than £50 from Luton with Cheap flights), famously cheap beer, and less than subtle marketing campaigns from the likes of Prague Pissup.com that trade on cheap booze, cheap strippers and cheap plane tickets as opposed to any of Prague’s more edifying cultural attractions its hardly surprising.

Visit Cheapflights.com for a selection of the most affordable plane tickets to destinations in Eastern Europe including Tallinn, Vilnius and Riga.
